It had been a tough week in the City That Never Sleeps. I was up to my ears in aristocrats on death row, hot gems being rolled from one fence to the next, artworks said to contain supernatural powers, tomes written in insane ciphers, some bloodthirsty schnook in museum-grade armor out to bury the hatchet not so peaceable-like, and all the loons that come with cases like these. I’d picked a bad week to give up smoking, and the night was hotter than the Devil’s mistress on a club-hopping binge. I needed a break. And then he walked in my door. He had a long reach, kinda grabby for a dame like me. He’d come to call on me to deal with a cult so fishy that lutefisk would be a kid’s breakfast treat by comparison. But he was powerful, and rich and ready to pay my particular expenses. That’s just the way I like my clients…
